The Rt. Rev. Sally French

13th Bishop of the Diocese of New Jersey

The Rt. Rev. Sally French was elected to be 13th Bishop of the Diocese of New Jersey on Jan. 28, 2023, and was consecrated on June 24.

Prior to her election, Bishop French served as Canon for Regional Ministry and Collaborative Innovation in the Diocese of North Carolina. Her work provides congregational support to churches in the diocese’s Raleigh, Durham, and Rocky Mount. She works with clergy and lay leaders to strengthen vitality and foster collaboration.

The Rev. Canon Susanna Cates

Canon for Formation and Vocations

Mother Susanna received her Master’s Degree of Divinity from the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in 2013 and has served as an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Northwest Texas, the Diocese of Newark, and now in the Diocese of New Jersey. She’s married to William and is a joyful “bonus parent” to her five stepchildren.

Originally raised in the Jewish tradition, she rejoices in the diversity, openness to questions, and welcoming spirit of the Episcopal Church–and she loves to hear about everyone’s faith journeys!

Clare Gutwein

Youth Missioner

Named Youth Missioner effective in October 2023, Clare started in the position of Diocesan Youth Co-Convener in early 2020, after attending graduate school at Rutgers University in Newark. Her studies there focused on Urban Systems with a particular interest in youth, education, community organizing and anti-racism work. Before that Clare taught history, science, and language arts to English language learners in Arlington, Virginia. Currently she spends much of her time outside of diocesan youth work raising three small and very energetic children.
